Forza Horizon 6 offers players a wide range of car customization options, and one of the coolest details you can add is an authentic Japanese-style license plate. Whether you want a subtle nod to JDM culture or a fully realistic regional plate, there are a couple of ways to achieve it in-game: using the built-in license plate editor or crafting a custom plate through the Livery Editor.

Method 1: The In-Game License Plate Menu (Fastest)

Forza Horizon 6 includes Japanese-style license plates that adjust automatically based on vehicle type. The built-in editor is the quickest way to get a plate with some Kanji elements, though it comes with limitations.

Head to your Horizon Festival or visit your garage.
Select the License Plates tile at the bottom of the customization menu.
Enter your desired text. The game will format classification codes for you?for example, the 300 series for vehicles over 2.0L and 500 series for smaller engines.
Keep in mind the text options are limited. Only a small selection of Kana characters is available, and there isn?t a deep Kanji database. Certain number combinations, like 33 or 88, may also be blocked.

This method is great if you want a fast, playable plate without getting into complex vinyl work.

Method 2: Livery Editor Custom Vinyls (Most Authentic)

For players aiming for full authenticity?like a Shinagawa 品川 or Adachi 足立 plate?the Livery Editor is the way to go. You can bypass in-game text restrictions and recreate accurate regional Japanese plates.

Step 1: Remove the Stock License Plate

Before adding a custom plate, you need a clean surface.

Open the License Plates menu.
Press X (Xbox) to remove the existing plate completely.
Step 2: Download a Community Plate Base

Rather than building everything from scratch, leverage high-quality community templates.

Go to Designs and Paints > Apply Decals.
Select the placement zone on your car?s front or rear bumper.
Search for terms like "Japanese Plate", "JDM Base", or "Kanji" to find blank or partially completed plates.
Apply a high-resolution base vinyl to get the correct plate proportions.
Step 3: Layering Kanji and Numbers

Authentic Japanese plates follow a strict structure:

Plate Element Format Details Real-World Example
Top Left (Kanji) Municipality or registration office 品川 (Shinagawa), 多摩 (Tama)
Top Right (Classification) 3-digit vehicle class code 300 (over 2.0L), 500 (under 2.0L)
Bottom Left (Hiragana) Identifier character さ, れ, わ (rental cars)
Center (Serial Numbers) 4-digit sequence with hyphen or dot ?1-23 or 45-67

Tips for achieving realism:

Use community vinyl sets or create Kanji shapes with simple geometric layers if a direct symbol isn?t available.
Group all elements and align them precisely over the car?s plate indentation.
Scale carefully so the plate looks proportional to your vehicle.
Final Thoughts

While the in-game menu is convenient, the Livery Editor method unlocks true authenticity. By layering accurate Kanji, classification codes, and Hiragana, you can replicate any Japanese regional plate in stunning detail. Exploring community vinyl groups can save time and often provides high-quality assets that elevate your car customization.
